2014-2015 Automobile Recycling Awareness Contest

During the 2014-15 school year students in grades 5–12 were invited to participate in a national recycling awareness contest sponsored by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) and JASON Learning. The theme of the contest was automobile recycling.

Did you know that cars are the number one recycled product in the United States? Each year, about 10 million vehicles are recycled across the country. As a result, valuable commodities — raw materials — such as steel, iron, precious metals, and rubber are available to be used in new cars and many other products. The automobile plays an important role in our everyday lives. Have you ever thought about how many different commodities are needed to make all the parts that go into a car? Did you know that almost all these commodities are recyclable?

We challenged students to research one or more of the commodities that go into making a car and find out what happens to each commodity through the automobile recycling process and beyond. They creadted an original video or poster in the style of an infomercial or awareness campaign to illustrate the process and challenges that go along with recycling their chosen commodity or commodities into a reusable form. Students entered the contest as individuals or as teams of up to four individuals.

Entries were judged by a committee of representatives from the sponsoring organizations. Judges evaluatee each entry on the clarity and accuracy with which it portrayed the process and challenges of recycling the chosen commodity or commodities into a reusable form, how well the entry’s message connected to people’s everyday lives, the creativity and originality of the entry, the quality of the entry, and the overall impression of the entry.

Two of the winning entrants received a trip to ISRI’s Annual Convention & Exposition in Vancouver, British Columbia, where they were recognized for their efforts during the convention's opening ceremonies
