2014-2015 Plastic Film Recycling Contest: "Think Outside the Bag"

Students in grades K–12 were invited to participate in a national plastic film recycling contest sponsored by SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association (SPI) and JASON Learning.

Plastic bags and many other flexible plastic film products are 100% recyclable. Yet, as of 2012, only 12% of these items were being recycled. We challenged students to convince members of their community to recycle their unwanted plastic films — including grocery bags, product wrapping, and dry cleaning bags — by designing posters and creative local campaigns.

Representatives from SPI and JASON judged the entries in three grade bands: K–4, 5–8, and 9–12, and selected first place, second place, and third place winners from each grade band. Winners received cash prizes.

Judging factored in the following criteria:

  • quality, clarity, accuracy, and persuasiveness of the message of the campaign poster
  • creativity and originality of the campaign
  • execution and impact of the campaign
  • quality, clarity, and informative nature of the presentation
  • intended usage of cash prize
