Immersion Learning - Ancient Eruptions

In Immersion Learning’s Ancient Eruptions multimedia curriculum, students travel with oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard to the Greek island of Thera to explore the site of the second-largest volcanic eruption in human history. As virtual members of the expedition team, students will use reading selections, hands-on activities, photos, videos, games, and more to learn about the volcanic island and the fascinating civilization that thrived there before the eruption.

Through their Immersion adventure, students will:

  • Meet real-life scientists and learn about their work
  • Explore a wide variety of STEM topics including the navigation, volcanism, plate tectonics, rocks and minerals, archaeology, natural disasters, and careers

As with all Immersion Learning curricula, Ancient Eruptions is designed to be implemented in a wide variety of informal and formal education settings such as after-school programs, summer camps, and elementary and middle school science classrooms. The curriculum includes enough material for six to 20 lessons with activity notes, extensions, multimedia connections, adaptations for younger students, and additional educator resources.

The Ancient Eruptions multimedia curriculum includes...

Educator Pack
The educator pack includes a 110-page full-color copy of the print curriculum, a CD containing a PDF version of the curriculum, and a DVD containing corresponding video clips. Each of the 12 hands-on activities in the print curriculum includes a student reading selection, activity masters, and comprehensive educator notes. The curriculum is written at a fourth grade level and can be used with students in grades 1 through 8.

Website
The Immersion website contains on-demand videos, photo galleries, maps, interviews with Ancient Eruptions expedition team members, an interactive game, archived blogs from the expedition, a library of curated weblinks related to the curriculum content, and information for educators.

Videos
A 30-minute DVD introduces students to key science concepts and offers a window into the exciting world of research and exploration through the work of real-life scientists and stunning footage from the Ancient Eruptions expedition. The nine video segments included on the DVD are also available on-demand on the Immersion website

Interactive Game
The Blast from the Past game on the Immersion website allow students to explore topics from the Ancient Eruptions curriculum in an interactive way. In the game, students analyze whether stories about a violent volcanic eruption on the island of Thera 3,600 years ago could have inspired the legend of the lost island of Atlantis.
