Immersion Learning - Secrets of the Gulf

In Immersion Learning’s Secrets of the Gulf multimedia curriculum, students join oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard and a team of scientists as they explore the biology, geology, and archaeology of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico. As virtual members of the expedition team, students will use reading selections, hands-on activities, photos, videos, and more to learn about coral reefs, brine seeps, mud volcanoes, and other fascinating features in the region.

Through their Immersion adventure, students will:

  • Meet real-life scientists and learn about their work
  • Explore a wide variety of science topics including rocks and minerals, petroleum formation, density, coral biology, food chains and food webs, manta ray biology, marine archaeology, technologies used in ocean exploration, and careers

As with all Immersion Learning curricula, Secrets of the Gulf is designed to be implemented in a wide variety of informal and formal education settings such as after-school programs, summer camps, and elementary and middle school science classrooms. The curriculum includes enough material for eight to twenty lessons with activity notes, extensions, multimedia connections, adaptations for younger students, and additional educator resources.
